Finding Remote Jobs and Work-From-Home Opportunities
1. Geographical Search Box of Common Job Sites — Use “Remote”
If you haven’t looked for a job in some time, you might not be aware that all of the top job sites (including Indeed.com, Glassdoor.com, LinkedIn’s Job Board, etc.) now allow you to input the term “remote” in their geographic search field. That limits results to roles the employer has marked as work-from-home opportunities.
There are currently over 194,000 remote openings posted across the U.S. on Indeed alone. There is no question that giving staff flexible work arrangements offers many advantages to employers. Most every employment advertising site has formatted its unique cyber geography with the new "remote" geographical code in response.
2. That said, Don’t Fully Trust the Above Step, Either!
Though you can definitely try some searches using the method above (putting “remote” in the location box), I’d recommend running a second search that is a bit more advanced. If that’s the case, you’ll want to do a search on Indeed.com with the geographical box left blank (but the following in the main “What” search box on site:
- “remote role” OR “remote work”
- “hybrid role”
- telecommute OR telecommuting
- “work from home”
- “home office”
- “virtual work”
Though only a handful of employers make the geography for a job remote in name, many may still advertise an option for remote or hybrid work itself in the body of the job description. Simply searching the phrase above will bring up a ton of other openings you haven’t yet seen that could provide an easy telecommuting position.
To filter the results even further to your specific profession or career path, run the exact search we show below and substitute job title in quotation marks with whatever kind of position you’re targeting.
“job title” AND (“remote role” OR “remote work” OR “virtual work” OR hybrid OR telecommute OR telecommuting OR “work from home”)
3. Indicate Remote or Hybrid in LinkedIn “Open to Work” Feature
Looking for another way to boost your chances of getting a work-from-home job? If you have a LinkedIn account, activate the “Open to Work” feature on your profile page so employers know you’re looking for new opportunities. In the same menu, you set Remote and Hybrid also as workplace types.
If you are currently employed and searching for a job without your employer knowing, make sure you read the important privacy considerations that LinkedIn outlines in their help section on this particular feature.
If you choose to upload your resume to more traditional job sites like Indeed.com, Monster.com and Glassdoor.com, you’ll see they tend to also include options for work-from-home or hybrid preferences. Many of these sites are fully cognizant of the tremendous move to remote and flexible work in recent years, so they now have settings in your account and profile where a professional can specify their preferences.
4. If You Decide Academic Research Is for You, Look at Jobs Well-Suited to Remote Work
For early-career workers who are just beginning their professional journeys and seasoned professionals considering a career change, now could be an enjoyable time to explore some new job opportunities that facilitate more remote work. To find out more, speak with school admission officers as well as professors and experienced professionals in different fields that interest you.
Ask them how flexible they think a given type of job would be, geographically speaking, and if it seems like the right fit for someone who wants to work remotely.
Now let’s not kid ourselves, there still are plenty of jobs even in today’s world (e.g., chef, plumber, nurse, forest ranger, safety manager) which needs to go to a physical workplace. And yet, things are evolving quickly, and you may notice some exceptions when speaking with people in these realms.
Take the growing adoption of telehealth practices as an example — many medical professionals can now work remotely, if only part time, offering advice over the phone and web conference to patients. So don’t make assumptions — speak to professionals in the industries that interest you and hear their perspectives!
5. Investigate Companies That Have Gone “Full Telecommute”
Finally, if you have already tried all of the above to get a remote role, one final route to consider may be tracking down companies that have declared permanent changes to allow their employees work from home.
